West Virginia is the third most forested state in the USA - nearly 80 percent is tree-covered with 36 state parks and seven state forests forming more than 200,000 acres of natural wonder and scenic beauty to provide tourists with a brilliant show of autumn colour across the Mountain State. West Virginia's varied topography and elevation, ranging from a few hundred feet above sea level to nearly a mile high, stretches the leaf-peeping season from late-September into the early days of November. Viewing fall foliage is one of the most popular activities and it ties in with many traditional festivals. There are small towns and villages to discover with quaint local shops and inns, numerous outdoor activities from hiking and biking, to rafting and fishing or just driving the scenic byways and admiring the view.
