Scariest places in America to visit!

With the Halloween season quickly approaching, here’s our tips to give you some insight into the most haunted places in America. Massachusetts has many haunted sites and many stories to tell, this will be one to see the sights and give you frights. 

New England

Wood Island Lighthouse in Maine has a history of ghosts and a whole lot more for visitors to hear and see. In 1806, the US Government purchased 8 acres at the Eastern end of Wood Island in Saco Bay off the coast of the State of Maine and built the lighthouse. Looking for a haunted tavern to top off your evening, the oldest and supposedly most haunted tavern in America, White Horse Tavern in Rhode Island is calling. Opened In 1673, the tavern has served as a meeting of minds for centuries with British soldiers, sailors, pirates and founding fathers having used this establishment. Employees have often said there is something strange around the corner and have reported being tapped on the shoulder as well as hearing mysterious footsteps. Emilys Bridge in Vermont is a covered bridge which is supposedly haunted by a young woman with a mysterious past. Visitors often leave roses on the bridge. 

Massachusetts 

Massachusetts must be number one on anyone’s fear bucket list. With amazing history and buildings to visit, you truly get the sense of the stories behind the legends. The notoriety of Salem is not missed. From movies like Hocus Pocus and plays like The Crucible, Salem has played an important part in culture and history. The witch house in Salem in Essex Street is the last standing structure with ties to the witch trials in 1692. The Old Burying Point cemetery in Charter Street the second oldest cemetery in America, is one to explore. Try to identify who is buried and imagine the lives they led. At Salem Haunted Happenings festival dive into history at a museum, find an adrenaline rush in a haunted house or seek out your future at a psychic fair, this is one to experience all things spooky and the largest Halloween celebration in the world. Visit the Peabody Essex Museum to see original documents from the witch trials and step inside 318 Essex Street where scenes from Hocus Pocus were filmed.

West Virginia 

Take me home… to West Virginia. Yes, the place known for mountains and John Denver also has a haunted history that will send chills through your spine. Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum has a notoriety of housing and treating mentally ill patients. This included medical practices that are now illegal. From the twisted nature of the asylum comes legends that will make an indelible mark. West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville is an epic place with spirits and chills to discover, from prisoners to guards with twisted stories to explore. It is rumoured Charles Manson wanted to be transferred but was denied and this was also the location for the film Shawshank Redemption. Step through the shadows and uncover the chilling and ghastly tales of murder, revenge, lust, and heartache.

Savannah 

The Hamilton-Turner Inn in Abercorn Street is known for ghosts and ghouls and all things in between. See billiard balls rolling around above you and perhaps a strange silhouette of a man smoking a cigar. The Marshall Inn in Broughton Street is now a hotel but was used as a hospital on several occasions in the 19th century. With taps turning on by themselves and hearing non-existent children, you never know what is around the corner. What do the ghost of a woman scorned, a slave cook, and a servant boy all have in common, the answer? The 17 Hundred 90 Inn and Restaurant. You might spot Anna, one of the most famous ghost-girls in the city who haunts the upstairs guest rooms waiting for the return of her lost love. The Pirate’s House has created a mark on history in the city though the brutish treatment of forced labour to serve on the sea.
