Day 1Arrive in Denver and stay one night. Visit the State Capitol Building where you will find the marker that shows you exactly one mile above sea level! Denver has a diverse range of attractions, museums, arts and entertainment and shopping.
Day 2- Denver to Taos, approx. 310 miles.
Collect your car and head for New Mexico. Travel through Taos Canyon and arrive in the town where you will spend two nights. Enjoy the famous 'Heart of Taos' plaza - a hub for shops, galleries, restaurants and entertainment. Don't miss a tour of the Taos Pueblo, which has been continuously inhabited fot over 1,000 years. You might consider taking a scenic drive through the "Enchanted Circle". This 85 mile loop takes you through Angel Fire, Eagle Nest, Red River and Questa.
Day 4- Taos to Santa Fe, approx. 70miles.
A historic walking tour is the best way to absorb the flavour of Santa Fe. Stroll through more the 400 years of Western history, art and culture and more than 1,000 years of Native American Heritage, including the historic plaza, the Palace of the Governors, the St Francis Cathedral, the Loretto Chapel and the State Capitol. Take a side trip to Bandelier National Monument (about 1 hour from Santa Fe) and descend into a canyon filled with the ruins of the Anasazi civilization, ancestors of today's Pueblo Indians. Stay for two nights.
Day 6- Santa Fe to Albuquerque, approx. 65 miles.
With two nights here, you can take time to see all the Old Town Plaza, with more than 150 shops and galleries housed in historic adobe buildings, hidden among patios and winding paths.Enjoy a wide variety of cafes and restaurants set in a casual atmosphere. Travel on the Sandia Peak Tramway, passing through four of the Earth's seven life zones on the way. Be sure to bring your binoculars: wildlife such as bear and mule deer can sometimes be seen on the slopes. The view from the top is breathtaking. Spend some time at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. Discover arts and crafts from New Mexico's 19 pueblos.
Day 8- Albuquerque to Ruidoso, approx. 185 miles.
Stop along the way at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, known as one of the most spectacular refuges in North America. Explore the beautiful mountain village of Ruidoso. This is Billy the Kid Country so make sure you visit the unique stores in Ruidoso's 10 block shopping district. From Ruidoso you can also visit White Sands National Monument and Three Rivers Petroglyph Park. Spend two nights here.
Day 10- Ruidoso to Carlsbad, approx. 150 miles.
En route you can stop and visit at the UFO Museum to learn more about this mysterious area. Visit the Carlsbad Caverns and descend 830 feet to a land of stalagmites and stalactites. For something a little different, you could have lunch 750 feet below ground at Carlsbad Caverns! Stay one night here.
Day 11- Carlsbad to Las Cruces, approx. 210 miles.
Spend your last two nights here, close to the border with Texas. The Old Mesilla is the beautiful plaza of southern New Mexico's most visited historic community. Over 40 building feature a selection of antiques, museums, galleries and unique gift shops. Surrounded by agricultural land, the region grows pecan, and a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables. Tour La Vina Vineyard and Winery, one of the country's oldest wineries. Located outside Las Cruces in La Union, NM, La Vina produces a delicious array of vintages.
Day 13- Las Cruces to El Paso, approx. 45 miles.
Drop your car at the airport in time for your flight home.
