Day 1 – Chicago, IL
Fly from the UK to Chicago and stay in the city for two nights. Pick up your hire car while at the airport.
The city of Chicago has activities on offer for everyone; you can visit world-class museums, dine at one of many Michelin-star restaurants or catch a show in one of over 200 theatres! You’ll never run out of things to do in this dynamic city, including tours, spectator sports, and shopping. A must-do is a walking tour of Chicago, where you can enjoy stunning architecture including the Loop, shop the “Magnificent Mile” of Michigan Avenue and walk along the Lakefront of Lake Michigan.
Day 3 – Chicago to Galena, IL (approx. 164 miles)
Drive west to Galena, a small but beautiful vacation town full of rich history and charm. Stay in Galena for two nights.
Whether you’re wanting to explore the outdoors, shop ‘til you drop or sample some delicious local food, Galena has it all for you to experience! Our recommended attractions include the Mississippi River Cruise, Fergedaboudit Vineyard & Winery and the Twenty Dirty Hands Pottery Tour. Don’t forget to take a walk downtown, where you can find nearly 100 storefronts, restaurants and art galleries.
Day 5 – Galena to Shawnee National Forest, IL (approx. 392 miles)
Drive down to the Shawnee National Forest, located in southern Illinois, to end your great family adventure. Stay three nights in the Shawnee National Forest area.
Nestled between the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, this spectacular sanctuary boasts lakes, creeks, open lands, rolling hills and forests – all ideal for outdoor recreation. We recommend that you visit the gorgeous Garden of the Gods and hike along the Rim Rock Recreational Trail for a true experience of the Shawnee National Forest. If you enjoy mountain climbing, you should definitely head down to Jackson Falls located near the town of Ozark, where you can climb 60 feet of sandstone cliffs and boulders.
Day 8 – Return to Chicago (approx. 350 miles) and drop off your car in time for your flight home.
