Day 1 – Wichita, KS Arrive in Wichita where you will spend your first night. You’ll have plenty of time to explore at the end of your Kansas road trip.
Day 2 – Wichita to Dodge City, KS, approx. 155 miles
Head first to Greensburg – a small farming, gas and oil community that was literally flattened by a devastating tornado in May 2007, re-emerging Phoenixlike as Greensburg ‘GreenTown’– now a leading-edge ‘green’ and eco-friendly town. On to Dodge City for two nights, a gateway to history that began with the opening of the Santa Fe Trail. Dodge City quickly became a trade centre for travellers, buffalo hunters, railroad workers, soldiers, and drifters who ‘settled their differences’ in shoot-outs.
Day 3 – Dodge City
During the late 1800’s, notable lawmen such as Bat Masterson and Wyatt Earp became legends as they fought to establish law and order. Tour Dodge City, Fort Dodge, and the Santa Fe Trail on the Dodge City Trolley. Boot Hill Museum is a highlight and is home to the Long Branch Variety Show. Dodge City boasts numerous great steakhouses!
Day 4 – Dodge City to Great Bend, KS, approx. 140 miles
Drive to Larned at the ‘Heart of the Santa Fe Trail’ and the country’s bestpreserved prairie frontier fort – Fort Larned National Historic Site. The Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway connects two of the world’s most significant natural wetlands – Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge - hosting millions of migrating birds each year, including Whooping Cranes.
Day 5 – Great Bend to Abilene, KS, approx. 160 miles
Travel along the 16 mile Post Rock Scenic Byway, winding through the beautiful Smoky Hills and around Wilson Lake and tiny town of Wilson – the Czech capital of Kansas, and zany Lucas – the Grassroots Art Capital of the state. Lucas is world famous for the quirky Garden of Eden – listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Continue to Abilene, the official end of ‘The Chisholm Trail’ – the famous cattle trail stretching all the way up from Fort Worth, TX.
Day 6 – Abilene to Hutchinson, KS, approx. 95 miles
Spend the morning in Abilene - grown from a small cowtown in 1857 to a thriving town today. Highlights include President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s Museum, Library, boyhood home Visitor Center, and Place of Meditation where Ike, Mamie, and their son are laid to rest. Other interesting attractions in town include the Seelye Mansion and the Patented Medicine Museum and Gardens. In Hutchinson visit the Cosmosphere – a world-class space museum featuring a huge collection of US space artefacts.
Day 7 – Hutchinson to Wichita, KS, approx. 55 miles
Pay a morning visit to Strataca - the Kansas Underground Salt Museum is a unique experience, 650 feet underground and a vast expanse carved from ancient salt deposits. Then head for Wichita. Here, the iconic ‘Keeper of the Plains’ is a great place to start your exploration. Move on to Old Cowtown Living History Museum with a strong flavour of the old west. Eight distinctive shopping districts make it a shopper’s paradise, while Old Town is an eclectic mix of live music venues and restaurants.
Day 8 – Depart from Wichita, KS
