Days 2-4 - Discover Philadelphia
Philadelphia is home to one of the largest urban park systems in the nation, with over 100 parks, squares, and recreation sites totalling over 10,000 acres. One of the city’s key highlights is Fairmount Park with its horticultural centre, walking, biking and hiking trails, museums and historic mansions.
In William Penn’s original plan for Philadelphia, he envisioned five squares stationed evenly throughout the city’s grid-like system of streets. Now four of these squares — Rittenhouse, Franklin, Washington, and Logan — serve as recreation and community spaces, each with its own unique features. The fifth square, Centre Square, is where you will find Philadelphia’s historic City Hall.
The Barnes Foundation houses a fine collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and early modern paintings with extensive works by Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse and Picasso. Art lovers can head next door to the Philadelphia Art Museum and marvel at the astonishing mural arts phenomenon with over 4,000 public murals, sculptures and mosaics located
around the city.
If you are travelling in March, the annual Philadelphia Flower Show is a must! Make sure to get your tickets in advance to guarantee your entrance.
Day 5 - Head out of town. Collect your hire car and head out into The Countryside, approx. 25 miles.
Stay two nights in a unique hotel or bed and breakfast in the area. Explore the 3,400+ acres of Valley Forge National Historical Park – once home to General George Washington’s encampment during the Revolutionary War. Explore a number of hiking and biking trails in the area. Visit Longwood Gardens a sprawling botanical garden complete with lush conservatories and beautiful fountains. The gardens host an annual orchid exhibition in the four-acre conservatory, which draws visitors from near & far.
Day 7 - Return home
Time to do some tax-free shopping at the King of Prussia Mall, the largest retail shopping complex on the East Coast before driving to the airport to drop off your car in time for your flight to the UK.
